What have our students have been saying about New York Jiu Jitsu?

Here you can read what some of our students have said about New York Jiu Jitsu.

Adrienne W. (Yellow Belt with Black Stripe)

I got hit by a car while riding my bike. As I was sliding up the hood and as my back was connecting with the various points of the car and ending with the windshield, it occurred to me that I was crunched rather nicely and thereby protecting many vital organs and surface areas. After sliding back down the windshield, I placed both feet firmly on the ground, checked to see if I shattered the windshield glass and then thought to myself, "Make a note to tell NYJJ thanks for saving my life again." So, there you have it. Thanks!

Betsy W. (Orange Belt)

By immersing myself in the art of Jiu Jitsu over the past month, I've challenged my body, mind, and spirit to be the best I can be. I have improved my ability to defend myself in potentially dangerous situations. And I have found that I approach other activites and responsibilites with a greater amount of awareness, excitement, and calm.

Luz A. (Yellow Belt with Black Stripe)

I have always meant to take a self defense course but always put if off. Recently I decided to look into it again and during my search found New York Jiu Jitsu. I am comfortable with the fact that my class is at my same experience level - none at all! It is a friendly and welcoming enviroment that makes students feel welcome.

Garrett B. (Yellow Belt)

This newly found confidence, added with the rapid weight-loss and firming up of muscles long forgotten, has become a part of my life. That is why I started Jiu Jitsu....and I didn't even know it! And it's why I am going to continue here, for as long as I can.

Pam S. (Yellow Belt)

It's been one month since my first class and I have learned dozens of invaluable techniques and ideas. I've learned discipline through our repetition of blocks, kicks, strikes, and Tai-sabaki. I've learned to focus my attention through freestyle fighting. And finally, I learn a very valuable lesson in basic fighting techniques. I've learned to use one's own (negative) energy against them in conflict. This is an ideal that is practical not only in a life threatening situation, but in everyday life.

A month later, I am more observant of my surroundings, I'm aware of what techniques can be use in any given moment, and I'm confident when I go out that I have the tools to protect myself. I very thankful to NY Jiu Jitsu and my sensei for giving me a piece of my life back.

Ryan C. (Orange Belt)

I chose NY Jiu Jitsu because it struck me as just the right type of training enviroment. It was appropriately respectful of the traditions of the art, without using these traditions to exclude others. The instructors and students were young. The enviroment seemed welcoming and relaxed, while still staying focused. There was an "Intro" course that fit my schedule. And most importantly, there was a consisten underlying theme of trying to diffuse a situation first, and if that was not possible then acting accordingly. Essentially it is not a "Fight Club" looking to crank out a bunch of brainless warriors. This approach fits my personality and is very important to me.

My final reason for taking Jiu Jitsu is that it is fun. There are all sorts of things, especially in NYC, that you can do with your free time. This is an activity that provides a chance to challenge yourself, learn, socialize, and see tangible benefits all at the same time. After a month, I can say with complete confidence that I would recommend NY Jiu Jitsu to any of my friends.

Alison C. (Orange Belt)

I joined this class to enjoy some old-fashion classmate comradery. Living in the city is a blessing, but it drains me sometimes. I think I'm becoming more closed off, more like a snob. I'm losing interest in people, who already aren't my friends. I'm trying my best not to to forget how much I like meeting new people, especially when we're all focused on a a common goal.

Michael T. (Yellow Belt)

Jiu-Jitsu has afforded me an opportunity to escape my usual desk-bound routine. As a result, my time at work is more productive, and I have a greater sense of physical well being throughout the week.

Matt E. (Orange Belt)

Because of the long hours and constant deadlines I am always looking for new ways to relieve stress. Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to forget about all the other things I have going on and clear my head.

Jennifer F. (Orange Belt)

I look forward to the class as an escape from stress. I think the art of Jiu Jitsu gives me structure, valuable knowledge of self-defense, and greater self-confidence.

Alaina W. (White Belt with Black Stripe)

I enjoy the sense of discipline that it brings, committing myself to training twice a week regulary. Finally, I like the fact that, via a belt test, we are given the opportunity to prove to others and ourselves what we have learned. This helps me see what I have accomplished so far, and also how much more there is to learn.
